How to tell this is the part you need
It makes sense to check this unit when the engine cranks but will not start because the spark is gone; when a warm engine stalls and restarts once it cools; with unstable idle, jerking or flat spots under acceleration. These are possible signs, not proof: the coil, the wiring and the fuel system produce the same symptoms, so sourcing starts with checking the marking.
This is not a crankshaft position sensor (CKP) — that one mounts on the engine block near the pulley. This part sits inside the distributor, under the cap and rotor.
What to check before ordering
- The marking stamped on the removed part: a J, RSB or OE number.
- The number on the complete distributor, if it is legible.
- The connector pin count and the mounting shape.
- The engine, model year and body code of the car.
