Description

TIS-243 — distributor pickup sensor for Mitsubishi Lancer. Replaces Mitsubishi J834.

What it is and where it sits. A round base plate with a central bore for the distributor shaft. It mounts inside the distributor, under the cap and rotor. A sensing element sits on the plate and a slotted disc on the shaft interrupts the gap between the element and its counterpart, so the unit outputs a square-wave signal. In this class of parts the sensing element may be an optocoupler (an LED facing a photo receiver) or a Hall element; a photo of the assembled unit does not establish which, so we do not claim it for this part number. “Hall sensor” is the market name the unit is searched and sold under.

This is not a crankshaft position sensor (CKP) mounted on the engine block near the pulley. The distributor is camshaft-driven and turns at half crankshaft speed. Catalogues list the same part as an ignition module, igniter or distributor Hall sensor.

How it works. The sensor sets the timing but does not create the spark: its pulses go to the ECU and the igniter, which switches the coil primary.

Symptoms that point to this unit. The engine cranks well but never fires — with the signal lost the ECU can cut both spark and injection. Unstable idle, jerking under acceleration and stalling may indicate a broken signal: an oiled slotted disc, a degraded sensing element or a worn shaft bushing. Reddish dust inside the distributor is a reason to inspect the bushing. The coil, the wiring and the fuel system produce the same symptoms, so a symptom alone does not prove this sensor has failed.

Before replacing. The manufacturer does not publish supply voltage, signal levels or pinout for these part numbers, so we quote no figures — take them from the wiring diagram or service manual for your engine. Without a specification, check the rest: a clean and undamaged slotted disc, shaft bushing play, the connector and the wiring. The signal itself is best viewed on a scope — at a steady speed the pulses should be uniform, with no gaps. Rule out the coil and the wiring before replacing anything.
